After hearing some final comments from some of the 45 community members in attendance, the Waverly-Shell Rock School Board separately approved most of the previously discussed budget recommendations on Monday night.
The lone recommendation adjusted by the board was the reduction of the foreign language department by 1.38 full teacher equivalency (FTE). In an effort to not impact the German language program and also to take into consideration program growth, the board instead reduced the program by 1.0 FTE.
Boardmembers expressed significant hesitations before cutting 15 extended contract days, which are payments for the summer, for the Vocational Ag Instructor instructor.
Board member Dave Sage proposed cutting the contract days by 5 instead of 15, but the motion was not seconded, and he too, approved the 15-day cut.
Other recommendations accepted included eliminating the director of education services secretary position, reducing Junior High math 1.0 FTE in the area of mathematics, reducing the Junior High at-risk position 1.0 FTE, eliminating the elementary family advocate position 1.0 FTE and reducing the family and consumer science by .5 FTE. Also approved was the reduction of 10 extended contract days for the high school athletic director as well as 20 percent cuts to the athletic department budget.
